In ancient times, artists were often commissioned to create artwork by affluent patrons or institutions such as the church. Much of ancient art showed religious or mythological settings that offered stories to educate the audience. Some were also created to praise the King or Queen. But, later on, many artists began to create art based on their own experiences and on topics that they chose.
Some abstract artists experimented with the expressive use of colour, non-traditional mediums, and new techniques thus challenging the assumption that art must realistically depict reality.
Modern abstract art inventions offered radical new possibilities for representing and understanding the world. Although it may be impossible to find a scarlet thread that runs through all of the various movements that define Modern Art, there is a common ground that connects all of the well-known modern solutions.
